An AI That Designs Games

Michael Cook has set out to make an artificial intelligence (AI) that can design games. Why? Because he’s doing for his PhD and it’s an awesome idea is why. He calls the AI Angelina and their first game the two of them have made is available now!

On his project site he say the “aim is to develop an AI system that can intelligently design videogames, as part of an investigation into the ways in which software can design creatively.”

This is really nifty because if it’s possible that level and/or mechanics design can be done by a computer then overall game development can arguably become more accessible. Ultimately, if Cook is successful in his goal then we would be forced to further question what creativity means in a game making context.

Imagine if we have once AI making art assets and another AI using those assets to make a coherent game. I would love to see some bizarre game generate by such a beastly setup.

I hope the AI gets smarter and better at designing as his project continues. Right now there is still a lot of need for human intervention.

According to Cook, there are a few problems with a computer AI generating video games for a human audience. One is that Angelina can’t understand difficulty levels very easily — which explains why some levels were confusingly difficult. Cook has made user feedback a part of A Puzzling Present’s design, so that human interaction can be taken into account.

He has also built a system called “Mechanic Miner”, which presents Angelina with an impossible level and tasks her with coming up with a new mechanic to make the level passable.

Prolonged Hockey Strike Has Reporters Covering Virtual Games

The Montreal Gazette is tired of not being to cover the Canadiens playing real hockey so they’ve begun running NHL 13 AI versus AI games on consoles and will reporting on them.

Beginning with Thursday’s scheduled season opener against the Ottawa Senators, we’ll play the video game and let you know what would have happened, complete with reaction from the Canadiens’ dressing room. Look for it Friday in The Gazette and at

Get to Know Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the field of research that seeks to create intelligence through machines and programming. The term of ‘artificial’ has always troubled me because I don’t think there’s anything inherently artificial about the idea of intelligence. Perhaps synthetic or manufactured intelligence would be better. Or, perhaps I’m just being pedantic.

Anyway, I wanted to jot down some interesting things online about AI and how to learn more about (other than actually, you know, going to school for it). In particular, this is not about epistemology or anything of the sort, it’s purely about where to get information on mechanical and software based AI.

The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence “is a nonprofit scientific society devoted to advancing the scientific understanding of the mechanisms underlying thought and intelligent behavior and their embodiment in machines.” They have a collection of resources from their conferences, additionally they produce AI Magazine.

IEEE even has an annual Conference on Computational Intelligence and Games. Their archives is filled with slides and other information from the speakers, the 2012 conference just happened in September and already a lot is online.

If you want to dive right in to the world of AI and start producing your own version of intelligence then take a look at Stanford’s Introduction to AI which still has stuff accessible online. The creators of the course have gone on to create Udacity and now offer the AI course there.

The Best E3 2012 Gameplay Trailers

E3 finished earlier this week and I thought it would be worth while to keep an eye on some of these games.

What I find the most interesting about the first two is how the AI reacts. Interestingly the first two are also fresh new IP (intellectual property).

The best and most interesting trailer of all of E3 is for Ubisoft’s new game Watch Dogs:

I love how the character’s mobile phone is just as powerful as his gun. The opportunity for something really cool here is great and I hope issues from privacy to conceptions of panopticons are explored.

The Last of Us

I really hope this game takes a ton of inspiration from The Road.

Everyone is willing to do whatever it takes to survive. What you’ll see here is something that we’re calling Balance of Power AI. Enemies will react realistically to whatever situation your combat style forces them into. Playing as Joel, Ellie’s help and whatever weapons you can scavenge are your best shot at progressing in this brutal, violent world.

Dishonored looks like a steampunk retro-future game that combines stealth and action. I honestly don’t know what to make of this game and trailer.

Lastly, there’s Assassin’s Creed III. People on the net keep saying that this game isn’t going to be all “Go AMERICA” but from what I’ve seen you’re arguably only fighting on the side of the Yankees. Maybe all Brits are Templars?
